Makers 46

Intro:  From Makers Mark website:

Maker's 46® was created by Bill Samuels, Jr., to amplify the flavors he loves in Maker's Mark®. The innovative wood stave finishing process starts with fully matured Maker's Mark® at cask strength. We then insert seared virgin French oak staves into the barrel and finish it a bit longer in our limestone cellar. The result is Maker's 46®: bolder and more complex, but without the bitterness typical of longer aged whiskies.

Review:

Rubbing the bourbon on your hands and rubbing them together then smelling your hands.  It makes the bourbon experience much more enjoyable.  Like another layer in getting into bourbon.

Makers 46, the rub...

Wheat smell, with sweet aromas of corn and slight citrus.

The nose...

The first wiff was sweatness followed immediately by regret because the alcohol vapor burnt my nose.

The taste...

No lip burn, but tongue burn.  Immediate wheat taste familiar to so many wheated bourbons.  Maybe Im not such a fan of wheaters...  second sip...no tongue burn now. Oily on the tongue and after opening my mouth from swallowing, mouth burn all over but not in a bad way.  It has a smoothish finish.  Well rounded but not top shelf.

I was a Makers 46 hound, I mean that was all I drank until about two years ago.  Mmm...sitting here letting the long finish happen, you know that 2 minutes after you drank finish.  Definitely tasting the corn now...or maybe it’s the wife shucking corn next to me...

Either way is a great flavor and why I remember loving 46.  The other Makers are not as good to me.  46 has that French oak stave in the barrel finishing for 6 months...it does the job!

Is it worth $?

Yeah.  If you need a mid level bourbon this is a great option.  It’s easy to find and if you want a daily drinker, this could be a solid staple!
